A reflective and meditative reimagining of the hymn tune Aurelia, this work begins with fragments of the melody passed between a front-of-stage brass quintet, creating a flowing, polyphonic texture.
A tonal shift led by flugelhorn introduces the first clear statement of the hymn, with the quintet alternating between half-time and regular pulse, creating a sense of tension and suspension through subtle tempo contrasts and pauses.
The piece resolves into a full-band statement before closing with a restrained and reflective final phrase shared between quintet and ensemble.
Ideal as a contrasting or reflective item within a concert programme.
